Review: Americana’s Benedict

Ever since I jumped back into food blogging, I have wanted to finally review something from Americana. All of my experiences there have been nothing short of bliss. Capitol Hill’s food will just do that to you, though. Before I jump too ahead of myself, I want to take some time to talk about what a normal day at Americana looks like.

Americana is a narrow space, though it runs a little deeper with a bar and booths. Still, a weekend brunch date – during peak brunch hours – may require a wait time. For example, the other day, me and three other friends put our names on the list and we probably waited outside talking for another 30 minutes before we got a spot. Having said that, there have been other times where I have gone just nearly outside of normal brunching hours with only one other friend, and we were just some of the few there.

Wait or no wait, Americana is worth it. The staff at Americana make up some of the best parts of it. They’re always friendly, enthusiastic about their menu, and willing to accommodate special requests.

So, let’s talk about the food and drink.

I’ve had a few different drinks, in particular, from Americana. Just recently I topped off my brunch with a bourbon and coffee drink, served hot as coffee with the kick of bourbon. It was fantastic. This post’s particular time was their lavender mimosa. The lavender mimosa adds an evenness to the normally citrus kick of a regular mimosa that I greatly appreciated. It’s honestly hard to totally describe that mimosa, but it’s something I highly recommend to everyone.

The meal was also on another level. This take on an Eggs Benedict started with a layer of potato pancakes (with smoked Gouda and ham cooked into the pancakes), then the poached eggs, then a thick tomato and mushroom sauce – all with a side of toast.

For me, this was actually quite a bit of food, but I still cleaned my plate because I was incredibly hungry that day, and I had a long day of walking through the city ahead of me. If you’re concerned about portions, this was probably the equivalent of a meal you’d get anywhere else, I just knew that I was either going to end up having to eat it all, or find a way to save the rest. I chose the former, because I am a food champion, and you can’t stop me.

The potato pancakes were good, but they were definitely stifled down by the rest of the stuff on top of it. But it added a great texture to the dish, and I rarely turn down potatoes, anyway. The poached eggs were soft, tender, full of yolk, and they melted in my mouth. The tomato and mushroom sauce were clearly the winners of the show, however. Your dish isย covered in the sauce when you get it. The sauce’s flavor was more tomato than mushroom, but there were still hints of mushroom and lots of texture to hold onto as you eat through your meal. When I finished most of the Americana Benedict, I used the toast to pick up what I could of the rest of the sauce.

If you’re curious about the meat cooked in the pancake: 1) it’s noticeable but hardly standout with everything else, 2) you can ask for it out, 3) it is Canadian Bacon so it won’t be crispy, fatty chunks of bacon like you’d maybe expect.

Really, I’ll recommend nearly anything from Americana with either major assumption, or complete confidence because I’ve devoured it in less than 10 minutes. If you’re in Capitol Hill, Americana is just off the Westlake Station. If you’re light-railing from downtown Seattle, it’s an easy venture.
